Google Wants Pop-Ups Gone by Jan. 10

Posted on 2016-09-08 13:30:00

As of January 10, mobile marketers will have to re-consider their ad targeting plans. Ads like an intrusive popup or standalone interstitials will be removed. According to Google, these forms of intrusive ads have made content less accessible. Google says that starting Jan 10, they will slam sites that block content on mobile devices with popup ads and interstitials. Furthermore, sites will be stopped being labeled as “mobile-friendly” because every site after Jan 10 will simply be expected to be the case.

How does this affect the world of marketing and advertising? Mark Bauman CEO of ReviveAds thinks, some advertisers abuse popups and interstitials and bring on Google’s algorithm update themselves. Furthermore, Bauman believes that some marketers did so in the form of java overlays, app store redirects, in the case of Android Phones APKs. As of late, advertisers have been more and more applying this to the interstitials now, causing this trend. In terms of ad blocking and restrictions within the online space, the advertisers themselves are causing this increase in usage of ad blocks and the increase in restrictions by allowing this on. Publishers unfortunately, are perpetuating this by not policing their ad networks and the ad networks not policing the advertisers.

Is Google’s plan to demote sites with pop-up ads an abuse of power?

Posted on 2016-08-24 13:30:00

Say goodbye to seeing pop-ups in your mobile Google searches by January 2017. The big move by Google is causing quite a stir amongst marketers and advertisers. Some Marketers say that pop-ups are a nuisance and that Google intends to make the Internet a better place for everyone. While others say that Google is yet again policing the Internet with their power.

Our own CEO, Mark Bauman, thinks that this will be positive for nobody but Google. Our company has been known to think ahead. ReviveAds has created a new form of mobile redirection that can combat Google’s latest plan in taking over the world.

He continues, “it\'s extreme to restrict a site on how they can advertise or market. I believe it should be up to the user to visit that site.”

Ad Block Plus Seeks to Destroy Small Businesses Online

Posted on 2016-02-29 12:30:00

Controversy and debate ensues following the official explanation of Adblock Plus’s “acceptable ads” program provided by creator Eyeo, revealing a financial workaround for publishers to qualify for its whitelist. Now the most popular ad block software in the world, Adblock Plus is standing to profit from the very publishers it originally was designed to obstruct and experts from the media world are crying foul.

\"AdBlock

According to Eyeo, publishers that have more than 10M blocked ads can pay Adblock Plus 30% of its blocked ad revenue in order to make it onto its coveted whitelist. While the company assures that only an estimated 10% of its acceptable ad program members fall in this extreme category – and the rest can qualify for free – there are still strict standards that publishers must follow, and final approval (or dismissal) goes exclusively to Eyeo. Users and publishers alike are criticizing this move as defeating Adblock Plus’ purpose while risking punishing all publishers rather than the ones posting clunky and irritating ads.

Mark Bauman, CEO of elevated advertising agency MediaReps and leading ad block prevention tool ReviveAds, goes so far as to declare this revenue-for-whitelist exchange as extortion. A longtime veteran of the ad service industry, Bauman sees Eyeo’s controversial move as an unfair and unethical way to force publishers to pay big bucks in order to stay live online.

“Adblock Plus has set a standard for popular ad block software and is arguably the most-used system among consumers around the world,” Bauman said. “It has a powerful and influential presence and, in my opinion, is taking unfair advantage of that power by implementing this acceptable ads program. Even if a publisher doesn’t fall into the 10M category, it still needs to comply with Eyeo’s other requirements and Eyeo – and only Eyeo – gets the final say over whether or not the publisher gets on the whitelist or is just left in the dust.

“With this move, Ad Block Plus seems to be intentionally seeking to destroy small businesses online,” Bauman continued. “In addition to the revenue they’ve already depleted from bloggers, e-stores, and mom-and-pop retail, they are now looking to make them ineligible to compete unless they do 10M in ads.”

Eyeo has reported that it is “laying the foundation” for an official committee to take over this powerful decision-making role, though the timeframe for its implementation is not clear. Members of this committee are slated to be independent members of the ad industry.
Meanwhile, discussion of ad blockers and improving the mobile ad experience was heated at last week’s Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, where representatives from Yahoo, Google, an ad block company, and more sparred over how to handle the current state of the mobile ad industry. The heated discussion took place during a panel dedicated to ad blocking and ad engagement and introduced valid, yet clashing points regarding this timely issue.

AdBlock Plus Booted from Ad Industry Convention

Posted on 2016-01-24 12:30:00

AdBlock Plus has posted a screenshot of a blunt email exchange between the company and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), in which the popular ad-blocking firm was disinvited from the IAB’s annual conference. Without explanation, an IAB rep informed AdBlock Plus that its ticket has been refunded and the company will not be permitted to attend.

\"AdBlock

Boasting 400 million downloads, AdBlock Plus remains one of the most-used browser extensions online, and its absence from the IAB conference will surely be noticed. Competing ad block solution provider Ghostery remains on the conference’s attendee lineup and its CEO will take part on a panel discussion related to the increase of ad block use, so it seems that IAB officials have some kind of conflict with AdBlock Plus specifically, rather than ad blockers in general.

IAB has previously publicly noted its support for creating online monetization solutions void of the kind of heavy advertising that bogs down the user experience.

\"We messed up,\" an IAB blog post read. \"As technologists, tasked with delivering content and services to users, we lost track of the user experience... The fast, scalable systems of targeting users with ever-heftier advertisements have slowed down the public Internet and drained more than a few batteries.\"

When reached for comment, the IAB stated: \"The IAB Annual Leadership Meeting is for serious conversation among important digital industry stakeholders.\"

“ReviveAds.com offers website publishers four key services: detection and awareness, proprietary ad delivery, access to clicky advertisers, and access to ad block enabled content,” ReviveAds.com Founder Mark Bauman said. “Our team is comprised of only the best and brightest software pioneers and a unique collection of veteran publication owners, ensuring that our products are made specifically for the unique needs of website owners and operators. There’s nothing quite like ReviveAds.com on the market and we know that this technology will quickly become an essential part of publishers’ business operations.”

ReviveAds conforms to the Acceptable Advertising standard while approaching the growing issue of rising ad block use by removing barriers and regaining revenue for publications. The solution is compatible with ad block add-ons from all popular browsers, including Google Chrome’s robust ad blocker that now comes standard with every software update.
